Rachel Taylor

Aarhus University, Denmark

I absolutely loved the experience, it was a great chance to develop my academic knowledge while having a great cultural experience and making lots of new friends.

Rachel on Aarhus Summer School

How did you find the Summer School, academically?

We had 3 hours of lectures every morning, leaving the afternoons free to socialise. The class was very engaging and everyone was expected to contribute.

What extra-curricular activities did you take part in?

The university organises a social programme which I would highly recommend. Social programme activities include a trip to a theme park, a pub crawl, bowling, a city tour and museum tours. Outside of the social programme we went shopping, watched the world cup at the park and clubbing

What was the accommodation like?

The accommodation was very nice and spacious, and was quite different from accommodation in the UK. It was far away from the university but there were really good public transport links.

How did the experience enhance your international outlook?

I learnt that
- Americans don't use the word 'tick', they only say 'check'
- Danish people eat sandwiches with only one slice of bread
- Students in other countries often go to university later in life (or live at home) rather than moving out at 18!

How would you describe the experience overall and why?

I absolutely loved the experience, it was a great chance to develop my academic knowledge while having a great cultural experience and making lots of new friends.

What advice do you have for future students attending this summer school?

I would definitely recommend signing up for Social Programme activities before you go to Denmark, as tickets are very sought after. Everything is much more expensive in Denmark than it is at home, but Netto is a good option for cheaper food shopping. If you want to take public transport, the easiest way is to get a season ticket through the Mobilbillet app. Be careful with getting the night-bus as the rules are quite complicated in terms of tickets!
