As well as University bursaries, there are scholarships available to help fund your study and enhance your learning experience. You may also be able to get funding from other organisations.

Details

  • Student working at desk in accommodationTo apply for this scholarship, you need to have received an academic offer to study a full-time undergraduate course at the University of Sheffield starting in September 2018.
  • You'll need to put the University of Sheffield as your firm choice before 19 July 2018.
  • The accommodation award will be a standard single en-suite room at either Ranmoor/Endcliffe or City. Explore University accommodation.
  • There will be over 50 runners-up awards. The recipients of these will have the choice of either: a £500 University catering card or a year's peak gym membership at Sport Sheffield.
  • The award is for new full-time home fee-paying undergraduate students beginning their studies in September 2018.
  • You may be eligible to apply for more than one award but you will only receive either: one of the Scholarship Challenge awards or one of the Alumni awards.
  • Your application for the scholarship must be submitted by 5pm Monday 19 March 2018.
  • Within the application you will need to answer the above question with a 600-word essay, provide the URL to your unlisted YouTube video (details below) or upload your poster to your application. 
  • Selection process. Entries will be ranked by a selection panel consisting of academic and Professional Services staff and Sheffield Students' Union sabbatical officers. When making their decision the panel will give regard to the University's key values (as listed above) and their decision is discretionary and final.
  • The highest ranked applications will receive the accommodation award.  
  • All full-time courses are eligible.
  • You are still required to apply for accommodation from early March 2018.
  • We'll let you know by the end of April 2018 if you're provisionally successful and this will be fully confirmed once you secure your place at the University of Sheffield.

This means we'll be able to view your video but it won't be public. Please include the URL for your video within your application.

Terms and conditions

  • The Scholarship Challenge is a competitive process and not all applicants will be successful.
  • You must not already hold an equivalent level qualification.
  • By submitting your application you are confirming that this is your own work.
  • If you are selected to receive the scholarship you will need to have applied for University managed accommodation. Once the offer of accommodation is confirmed for a 42 week contract you will need to pay a £150 deposit to secure your accommodation. More information is available on the University accommodation web pages
  • All courses are eligible and awards are available across all faculties.
  • There are no cash alternatives to the awards.
  • No monies will be paid to the successful scholars. 
  • Catering cards are valid in any Accommodation and Commercial Services outlet, including bars and the Village Store but can be used for food and soft drinks only. The cards are non transferable and outstanding values cannot be refunded. Any remaining balance will roll over from year to year if unspent, until the student leaves University.
  • Receiving this award will not affect your eligibility to receive support from the Student Loans Company.
  • Receiving this award will not affect your eligibility to receive the University of Sheffield Bursary.
  • Receiving this award will not affect your eligibility to receive other scholarships outside of the Scholarship Challenge, apart from the Alumni Scholarship (you can only receive one of these two).
  • Applications will only be seen by members of the Financial Support Team and the selection panels. We will not share any personal details about you without your prior consent.
  • If successful, you may be asked to take part in promoting and sharing benefits of the scheme.



Alumni Fund scholarships 2018

  • Need to be eligible for a maintenance loan from Student Finance and have a household income of below £50,000.
  • Must have received an academic offer to study a full-time undergraduate course at the University of Sheffield starting in September 2018.

Alumni Fund scholarships - now closed

We're offering 150 Alumni Fund scholarships worth £3,600 each for home students starting their studies in September 2018.

These are entirely funded by donations from alumni and friends of the University from around the world.

Eligibility

To be able to apply for these scholarships, you must have a household income of £50,000 or less (as assessed by Student Finance). You must also have received an academic offer to study a full-time undergraduate course at the University of Sheffield starting in September 2018.

When assessing your application we will also take into account the following widening participation criteria:

  • Do you have a part-time job?
  • Have you entered the University through one of our outreach schemes?
  • Have you come from a school/college that is performing below the UK’s national average?
  • Are you the first person in your immediate family to go to university (other than siblings)?
  • Have you been in care as a looked-after child for at least 13 weeks since the age of 14?
  • Do you have a disability?
  • Are you a carer for an ill or disabled family member?
  • Are you from a black, asian and minority ethnic group?
  • Are you a female applying for a course in the Department of Economics or Faculty of Engineering?
  • Are you a male applying for a course in the in the School of Nursing and Midwifery; Department of Human Communication Sciences; Department of Psychology; Department of Sociological Studies; the School of English, Department of Oncology and Metabolism or the School of Education.

To check your eligibility for the following two postcode criteria, please use the postcode lookup tool. We'll use the home address you used on your UCAS form when you applied for your course.

  • Do you come from one of the most deprived areas of the country as defined by the government's Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) database? If your postcode IMD value is 16,250 or less, you meet this criteria. Please note this map covers England only.
  • Do you come from an area where it is not usual for people to go to university? This is defined by the government's classification called Polar 3. To meet this criteria your address must fall into quintile 1 or 2. Please note this information only covers the UK.

If your application is successful, you will be required to provide a copy of your Student Finance Entitlement letter from Student Finance, showing that you meet the relevant loan eligibility as detailed above.

Selection process

A selection panel consisting of senior academic and professional services staff will consider your scholarship application. When making their decision, the panel will take into consideration the widening participation criteria you meet and also give regard to the following:

  • Has the applicant provided a clear rationale for applying for an undergraduate course at the University of Sheffield?
  • Has the applicant identified clearly how the scholarship will be beneficial to her/his student experience?
  • Has the applicant clearly articulated future ambitions? These goals relate to the undergraduate course he/she has applied for, and they involve appropriate and credible contribution from which others will benefit.
  • Has the applicant had to overcome exceptional circumstances?

Applicants will be notified with the outcome of their application by the end of April 2018. If successful, you will receive the scholarship in three equal instalments of £1,200 over the first three years of your course.

This award is conditional on you being accepted and becoming fully registered on your specified course at the University of Sheffield during academic year 2018-19 and meeting the financial criteria for the scholarship.

About funding for the scholarships

The money for these scholarships is provided by donations from generous people, organisations and companies that want to support students given the rising costs of education. Many of the donors are alumni (former graduates) of the University of Sheffield.

If you receive an Alumni Fund scholarship you may be invited to relevant events, and to learn more about the work of the Development, Alumni Relations and Events Office during your studies at Sheffield.

Global Scholars 2018

Requirements:

  • A*AA grades at A Level (or equivalent) or higher. You can apply with lower predicted grades but you must get the above or higher to receive the scholarship. If your qualifications are from before 2010 then we'll accept AAA at A Level

or

  • Have a household income of £40,000 or less, as assessed by Student Finance England (or equivalent funding body)

Eligibility:

  • Must have received an academic offer to study a full-time undergraduate course at the University of Sheffield starting in September 2018.

We'll pay your air fare to an overseas summer school, as well as tuition and accommodation while you are there.

Global Scholars, a scholarship for UK/EU students, is part of our Sheffield Scholars scheme.

  • To apply for this scholarship, you need to have received an academic offer to study a full-time undergraduate course at the University of Sheffield starting in September 2018.

  • There are 30 awards available for students who apply based on their grades and 30 awards available to those who apply based on their household income
  • If you meet both criteria you only need to submit one application form
  • The summer school will be at one of our partner institutions in selected countries – we'll confirm placement opportunities after you have registered with us in September
  • You'll need to go in the summer after your first or second year
  • Summer schools are not subject specific
  • You should familiarise yourself with the summer school opportunities available, you will be asked to discuss your preferred choices as part of the scholarship application
  • We'll let you know by the end of April if you're provisionally successful and this will be fully confirmed once we know your grades
  • This scheme isn't available to you if you're starting a foundation year course or if your course includes a compulsory year abroad
  • You'll need to put the University of Sheffield as your firm choice before 19 July 2018
  • The award is only for new undergraduate students starting their first degree at the University

A selection panel consisting of senior professional services staff will consider your scholarship application. When making their decision, the panel will give regard to the following:

  • Applicant has provided a clear rationale for applying for their chosen undergraduate course at the University of Sheffield.
  • Applicant has clearly articulated how the scholarship will benefit their future ambitions.
  • Applicant has explored the portfolio of summer schools available and discussed a range of placements.
  • Applicant has detailed their strengths and weaknesses, and why they would be a good recipient of this scholarship.

Sports scholarships

Do you compete at an elite level in your  sport? Then you can apply. Our Elite Sports Performance Scheme (ESPS) gives athletes different levels of support, from free gym membership, to an annual £1,000 award. Each year, one first-year application is also selected to receive a year’s free accommodation, in lieu of a monetary award.
