Slavery in England before the trans-Atlantic slave trade

Until very recently, historians have usually begun the story of English slavery with the rise and fall of Britain's trans-Atlantic empire in the 18th and 19th centuries: it was an institution foreign to the English that they nevertheless introduced on the plantations of the Caribbean and America. This talk takes the story back into the 17th and 18th centuries. It outlines the introduction of the language of slavery into English and how Englishmen and women learned about and understood slavery before the establishment of the Atlantic slave trade.
