"Knowing your data is the beginning of all machine learning": first insights on data analysis, in collaboration with the Sheffield Women in Computer Science Society (SWiCS)

Age group: Year 12, Female and non-binary Y12 and mature students, although it is open to all students

In this session, you will be introduced to some basics of data analysis, a very important step in data-driven computing, including machine learning. We will show that first impressions can be wrong and will discuss implications of not doing a proper data assessment.

We will also have interactive activities with the Sheffield's Women in Computer Science Society (SWiCS), including a Q&A session with SWiCS highlighting how awesome it is to do Computer Science at University and debunking "common myths" of studying Computer Science as a female student (e.g. Computer Science is not for girls).

Taster session with the MiRo robot

This session is now full.

Wednesday 19 May 2021, 4:00pm - 6:00pm

  • We start with a brief overview of the MiRo robot and its special web-based simulator, MiRoCloud.
  • After a quick tutorial, the attendees will get a chance to try out programming MiRo with support from the tutor.
  • Develop behaviours and actions intuitively using MiRoCODE, a visual programming interface based on Blockly.
  • No prior experience in coding or robotics is necessary.
