The Broadway Musical

During the 1940s and 1950s, the Broadway musical achieved a peak in its popularity, with musicals by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, and Lerner and Loewe reaching millions thanks to the emergence of television and new recording technologies.

In this talk, Professor Dominic McHugh will give an overview of how musicals like Oklahoma! and My Fair Lady struck a chord with the North American family during the postwar period, giving way in the 1960s and 1970s to contemporary musicals with a completely different style and priorities.
