The University of Sheffield
Prospective undergraduates

Sheffield students make a difference to the world

Join the 2011 University of the Year

Study with us and you'll join the 2011 University of the Year. This is a prestigious award we've received from the highly respected Times Higher Education magazine. The award is great for us. It's nice to have our work recognised (and be part of a glitzy awards ceremony in London). But what would it mean for you, as one of our students?

A city to belong to

University of the Year, 2011 Times Higher Education awardsFirst of all, it means you'll discover an amazing new place to call home. Sheffield's not just a backdrop to your degree. Our students play a full and active role in the life of the city. They set up home here and fall in love with the place.

One reason we're University of the Year is our close connection with our city. We work with local schools, sharing the message that the University of Sheffield welcomes young people from all backgrounds. Our students give their time to volunteer and raise funds for good causes in our area. We collaborate with Sheffield businesses to strengthen the local economy and help create jobs.

So you'll live in a place that values its university and welcomes its students. There are some cities where undergraduates nervously keep themselves to themselves. Sheffield's not like that at all. We think it's the UK's greatest city for student life. And we think you'll agree.

Student life in Sheffield

Make yourself at home

Sheffield's a friendly place to learn as well as live. The world's best universities don't have to be stuffy, ivory tower institutions where the top academics seem to live in another world. We're the living proof.

We're a community of learning where students and lecturers reach first-name terms pretty quickly. And, more importantly, they're working side by side on the same team. (They've even been known to enjoy a cup of tea together afterwards.)

Our world-class teaching

Improving the world

Another reason we're University of the Year is our global impact. We're inspired by the way Sheffield people look out for each other. So our work extends that sense of community right around the world.

Here on our doorstep, our law students offer free legal advice to some of Sheffield's neediest people. Meanwhile, our engineering students have figured out a way of recycling crisp packets into blankets, fighting hypothermia among disadvantaged communities in Bolivia.

So study with us and you'll be able to make a real difference. Your work will make the world a better place.
