Tom Mitchell recently won an Employer Award while on placement and had his placement extended for the whole summer.
"I was originally offered a four week internship within the London Planning team at Colliers. Following my performance within this period I was asked to stay for a further two weeks. Colliers International is a particularly friendly organisation to be a part of and working within the planning team allowed me to learn from experienced professionals and benefit from valuable advice.
"During my time there I was involved in a wide scope of projects, including – but not limited to - submitting applications to discharge planning conditions, site visits, advising colleagues of the planning potential of development in principle, providing planning comments on development portfolios, interaction with London Borough Planning Officers regarding change of use applications, report preparation and research to aid the work of colleagues. I was given a large amount of responsibility quite early in the internship and therefore felt like I made a genuine contribution throughout my time there."
"Working in a central London planning team was an extremely valuable experience. The projects within which I was involved provided excellent exposure to residential, commercial and retail markets. The cross-discipline nature of the organisation meant that I was able to interact with, and ultimately learn from, development consultancy and residential agent colleagues. I was afforded the opportunity to meet senior members of the company and also benefitted from plentiful networking opportunities that have provided useful contacts for the future."
"I believe that the work undertaken during my placement will equip me extremely well for the final year of my degree. The skill set required to produce quality documents within a designated time frame is a skill that was further enhanced throughout the course of the placement. My knowledge of the field from a professional perspective, gained through working in a consultancy role, I believe has resulted in me working as a more commercially astute and rounded individual. I would thoroughly recommend such a placement in private sector planning – at this stage of the degree programme - to effectively compliment the modules studied thus far."
