Profile

Dr James Hickie is Research Associate in innovation at the University of Sheffield. He is working on innovation in city centre retail, as well as the negotiation processes involved in the property sector between property owners, retailers and local government. This forms part of the Economic and Social Research Council’s funded project on innovation in retail, REPAIR (Real Estate, Place Adaptation and Innovation within an integrated Retailing system).

Previously James was a Lecturer at the University of Manchester. He has a particular interest in curriculum development, having created new degree programmes in two areas: medicine and innovation; and, political science.

James has wide experience as a media commentator on innovation and entrepreneurship, including for the Sunday Times, Financial Times, Guardian, Daily Telegraph and ITV, discussing topics including start-up entrepreneurship, scaling up, entrepreneurial careers, high performing entrepreneurs, innovation in medicine, and entrepreneurship and innovation in cities.

He studied Social and Political Sciences at the University of Cambridge, followed by a PhD at Loughborough University about how young entrepreneurs build high performing businesses.
