Profile

I am a dual qualified Chartered Town Planner and Urban Designer (MA: Distinction). I trained in the UK and The Netherlands at the Universities of Manchester, Birmingham City and Amsterdam. Since 2000 I have been able to largely specialise in city centre regeneration, as the Urban Renewal Officer at Christchurch City Council in New Zealand, in the UK private sector and through the completion of my PhD at the University of Manchester. My PhD research was concerned with evaluating the impacts of ‘design-led’ regeneration, and sought to establish more precise understandings of the contribution of various components of design in regeneration efforts – with a focus on the Liverpool One scheme in Liverpool city centre.

Qualifications

Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. PhD in city centre regeneration.

Research interests

I am currently working on the ‘REPAIR’ project: ‘Real Estate, Place Adaptation and Innovation within an integrated Retailing system’, an ESRC-funded joint research project between the Universities of Glasgow and Sheffield. The project seeks to make a significant contribution to the debate on the (re)development of resilient and economically healthy urban retailing centres. As such, my research interests currently focus on city centre regeneration, retail resilience and assemblage theory.

Teaching interests

While my role at Sheffield University is purely research based, I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and have previously taught planning and urban design at the University of Manchester (2012-2018).
