The 12 month course MSc Real Estate allows students from a wide variety of backgrounds the opportunity to specialise in a career in surveying and gain professional accreditation from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

You will be taught by dedicated staff, experienced in academic and professional real estate practice. They will help you to gain knowledge of this complex and inter-disciplinary area, allowing you to understand its functioning by blending theoretical concepts with practical issues, to challenge and drive forward the profession.

Through your studies, you will develop your employability skill-set through report writing and innovative investment analysis, locating and responding to client requirements within their complex market context.

Autumn Semester

The focus of the first semester is on the acquisition and understanding of core knowledge and skills. Details of the modules all Commercial Real Estate students will take in this semster are set out below:

TRP625 Applied Real Estate Valuation (15 credits)

This provides you with an introduction to the principles underlying real estate valuation and covers the different methods of valuation. It provides an appreciation of the professional requirements of valuation and valuation report writing as defined by the RICS and, further, the importance of professional rules of conduct and the complexities of dealing with difficult situations in an ethically appropriate and defensible manner.

TRP6410 Real Estate Economics (15 credits)

This module sets out and explores the economic characteristics of real estate and the way in which these impact on the structure and operation of property markets. The use, development and investment sectors of the market and their interactions are covered and real estate within the local, regional and macro economies and real estate cycles are investigated.

TRP6404 Research Methods (15 credits)

Develops your core skills essential to undertaking and understanding research across different relevant fields within real estate. Includes grounding in quantitative and qualitative research methods as well as helping understand the types of research carried out and used in professional practice.

TRP6412 Investment Finance and Funding (15 credits)

Here you will be introduced to the principles of investment, to include: real estate as an asset class (both direct and indirect investment vehicles); the other main financial asset classes; concepts and measurement of risk and return; the different theories underpinning investment activities and their application to real estate; and an innovative workshop-based project exploring portfolio management.

Spring Semester

The second semester focuses on the development, application and integration of knowledge and skills. Students will take the following module:

TRP6426 Integrated Project (30 credits)

This module explores the basic concepts of valuation introduced in the Autumn Semester and critically evaluates their use and the consequent optimality of professional practice. Focusing on the investment method of valuation and through the development of applied spreadsheet skills, you will develop skills in critical thinking and the ability to suggest and apply appropriate solutions to client-based problem-solving. It builds further on knowledge introduced in the Autumn Semester, exploring issues and concepts at the individual property level, through the use of landlord and tenant law, using client-based exercises to help you to identify and advise on management and investment issues.

The project consists of two elements:

Investment Valuation

Covers the investment method of valuation; applications of traditional and modern methods of investment valuation; valuation of legal interests in property, including freeholds and leaseholds and the surrender and renewal of property as business circumstances change

Law of Business Leases

Covers the use of the business lease as a key tool of commercial property management. The impact of variations in the main terms of a lease upon its attractiveness and value to lessor and lessee and, by extension, on the value of investment property.

TRP6406 Dissertation (60 credits)

The Dissertation runs throughout the whole academic year, with the main part of the work culminating in the summer. The Dissertation focuses on the development of specialist knowledge and high level research skills in an area of your choice to reflect your interests. It is a substantial, planned programme of research that help you to develop your employability skills to a high level, to include: transferable business skills; research skills; and specialist knowledge and understanding of a selected subject area. Prepared under the individual guidance and supervision of a member of staff.

The content of our courses is reviewed annually to make sure it's up-to-date and relevant. Individual modules are occasionally updated or withdrawn. This is in response to discoveries through our world-leading research; funding changes; professional accreditation requirements; student or employer feedback; outcomes of reviews; and variations in staff or student numbers. In the event of changes the University will consult and inform students in good time and will take reasonable steps to minimise disruption.

Admissions Criteria

All applications are treated individually. The usual entry requirement is a 2:1 degree or evidence of equivalent achievement (for example, a professional qualification combined with work experience). Applications are also welcomed from candidates with a 2:2 degree, although evidence of relevant work experience or other activity is generally expected.

The programme is suitable for those from a wide range of backgrounds, including but not restricted to subject areas such as architecture, geography, urban studies, planning, economics, construction, law or other similar subjects, as well as non-cognate disciplines such as history, sciences and politics, for example.

English Language requirements

Overall IELTS grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, or equivalent.

Work Experience

Work experience is a vital part of your learning, helping you to be sure of your chosen career path. Many employers offer work experience and the Summer Schemes offered by some are available before you begin the course. While we don't necessarily require you to have work experience to be offered a place on the course, we strongly recommend it and many employers see it as a requirement in the competitive job market. Work experience is offered by both large international firms and smaller employers alike.

London Field Trip

Each year we run a field trip to London.

Meet employers and recruitment specialists

The field trip takes place in November, in the run up to the deadlines for job applications to the major industry employers. We meet Graduate Recruitment and HR representatives, to find out more about what it is like to work for them and to ask questions about the application process.

Contributors have included: JP Morgan, AEG Europe, Allsop, BNP Paribas, CBRE, Drivers Jonas Deloitte - tour of King's Cross Development Scheme, Fidelity Investments, Gerald Eve, Grosvenor, INVESCO, MSCI, KASPAR Associates, Land Securities, PPR (Property Portfolio Research, CoStar), PruPIM (Prudential Property Investment Managers), RBS, RICS, and Savills.

Learn valuable information from industry professionals

The field trip provides students with:

  • Access to senior figures able to help with the preparation of assignments and dissertations;
  • Exposure to industry practices and working environments;
  • Up-to-date information and the latest thinking by industry leaders;
  • First hand experience of the industry, vital in gaining competitive advantage in securing employment; and
  •  The opportunity to ask questions to people working in the industry.

The field trip for this year’s students included:

  • A visit to the offices of Gerald Eve where we had presentations from surveyors and HR representatives and got to chat to them informally over lunch.
  • A visit to Savills’ offices where we had presentations from HR and recent graduates. We also heard from commercial research analysts about the London office, retail and residential markets, offering a really useful insight for assignments and dissertations. A Q&A session gave students the opportunity to find out more about work and areas that they were interested in and what it would be like to work for Savills.
  • Insights into alternative and innovative approaches to investment risk management with M&G Real Estate in their city centre offices.
  • A visit to the offices of MSCI. There we learned about the intricate and detailed property and portfolio analysis carried out by MSCI and heard useful insights into market performance trends and forecasts for the future. This data analysis was incredibly useful for informing coursework and dissertation topics.
  • Lunch at JP Morgan’s city offices, where we heard about investment strategies, development finance and valuation that covered a huge range of crucial issues in today’s market. We also got to hear from the Chair for the Society of Property Researchers, giving us another chance to find out information and ask questions for coursework, dissertation topics and future career paths.
  • A guided tour of the Kings Cross Redevelopment Project by Argent LLP, where the new Google UK headquarters will be based. After that, we headed back to their offices, where we received first hand insights into the planning and development issues that have faced the project team since its initial inception.

Please note, although all accommodation and some food costs are covered, students are required to cover travel costs to and from London, as well as travel around the city.
