Page 1: Completing the site structure sheet

The pilot websites of CBE, English and Law were designed around a common set of sections. We try to adhere to these from both a usability and content perspective. However, we understand that certain departments content might not fit under these broad terms and that you might need to remove or add new section types.

The page content of the new sites has been shaped by student feedback and analysis based on what information they deemed a top task. Some of the below content is already on the central website and should be linked to and not duplicated on your open site where possible.

Web Support - Card Mapping - Architecture

If you have a really big site and want to keep quite a lot of pages, we might require a couple of hours of your time to conduct a card sorting exercise. This collaborative process allows us to decide where content will sit within the structure of the new site contributes towards the mapping of the local navigation. The example above is the mapping of the new Politics website.

Site structure document overview

Click the Site Structure tab at the bottom of the page. 

Section types (row 4)

  1. Home: The first page and top level of your website. Most of your other sections will have either text or photographic sign postings to them from here. Other content like contact details, AskUS, social links can be added too. As future functionality eg. News is rolled out these can be added at a later date.
  2. Undergraduate: Course information, open days, entry requirements and everything relating to prospective students.
  3. Postgraduate: Course information, scholarships, PhD Study and everything relating to the Postgraduate learning experience.
  4. MArch Programmes: Specific to SSoA. As the top- level menus aren't completely fixed you may find that you require a top-level menu that's specific to your department.
  5. Research: Your department's research themes, research centres, case studies etc.
  6. People: List your academic staff, researchers, professional service staff, technical staff etc.
  7. Our department: About your department can include contact details (address and map), news, events, Alumni etc.

Pages type key

  • Orange: Homepage which should always use the Homepage Content type.
  • Orange: A section page which mostly uses the Hub page Content type but on occasion there may not be enough relevant content to justify this Content type so you might just want to use a basic page Content type. The Department / About Us section is a good example of a section not using a Hub page Content type.
  • Blue: Basic page used for all other content.
  • Yellow: A page with a form on.
  • Red: Other page Content type (yet to be classified but could be used for a News story page)

Building the site structure document

  1. Use the Content Status page as a reference to how the Site Structure will take shape.
  2. We start with an Orange Homepage. Deciding on what is displayed on this page takes shape over the course of actually building the site. You don't have to decide straight away what goes on here.
  3. Next, we add our orange section/hub pages. These pages will mostly contain photographic signposting or text box links linking out to other basic pages in their section.
  4. Underneath this add blue basic pages that fall under that section.
  5. Some basic pages may act as a hub eg. Research themes. You could have multiple signposting boxes with research themed photos linking to their respective pages. In the sitemap, you would add these pages to the left of the parent page.
  6. Repeat the above until all your sections are populated with your pages.

Points to consider

URL length is a ranking factor for your pages in search engines like Google. To keep the second level fragments clean and deeper URLs shorter, where ever possible we should try to keep the second level to a single word.

For example:

  • /sitename/undergraduate/ not /sitename/undergraduate-study/
  • /sitename/postgraduate/ not /sitename/postgraduate-study/ or /sitename/postgraduate-home/
  • /sitename/phd/ not /sitename/phd-study/ or /sitename/phd-programmes
