The University is very fortunate in having many loyal alumni who care deeply about its future. Mr Tomlin has now been associated with the University of Sheffield for over 75 years and has continued to support the University throughout this time. He has been an active member of Convocation and the Sheffield University Association.
He has been a great supporter of the University Library and in particular, it’s Special Collections. He has donated a great deal of his archive papers on Radar and also his collection of books on the early teaching of Science.
Mr Tomlin is also a great benefactor to the University, understanding the power of higher education to unlock potential and the power that philanthropy can play in giving students their chance. Mr Tomlin was therefore seen as eminently deserving of the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award.
The Professor Robert Boucher Distinguished Alumni Award, for alumni of the University, is named in honour of the late former Vice-Chancellor Professor Robert Boucher. Professor Boucher had a great interest in alumni relations and gave so much to the city of Sheffield over a period of 40 years.
He fully appreciated the important contribution that alumni continue to play in the life of a University and was responsible for establishing the University's Development and Alumni Relations Office in 2002. The Professor Robert Boucher Distinguished Alumni Awards will be awarded to former students as an acknowledgement from their University of their achievements and success.
