Departmental Technical Manager - Civil Engineering
" I am currently the Departmental Technical Manager for Civil and Structural Engineering. Previous to this role I worked at the AMRC training centre and have been employed by the University since 2017.
Prior to working for the University I served in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers of the British Army for 24 years. The Army and and the University are the complete opposites when you compare the organisations, however they do share a common set of values such as collaboration, inclusivity, diversity and they strive for excellence in everything they do. Importantly they care about their people and that is important to me.
I am very lucky to work in a department with a strong research portfolio that spans a range of engineering disciplines. The outputs of our teaching and research has a positive impactful influence on society, and I am proud of the role I play in supporting this. Each day presents a new challenge, it is a great job!
I find the University to be really supportive of my personal and professional development, and in the past two years I have completed my MBA and NEBOSH as well as courses in first aid, mental health to name a few. During this time I have been fully supported by my line manager and other members of staff.
I would without hesitation recommend the University as a great place to work. I often mention it to friends and family but I find many people are put off because of prestigious status. All I can say is, don't. There are lots of really good job opportunities, so find something you would love to do and apply. There is nothing to lose but lots to gain. I am always looking for technicians who are team players, have a 'can do' attitude, and the aptitude to learn new skills quickly. "
