These 5-credit modules are designed to help students to link their language learning with their Postgraduate programme.

MDL6061 Enhanced Languages Project I (5 credits)

The aim of this module is to offer students the opportunity to further increase their skill as translators in the specific language pair under study. The course analyses material from the word to the text level and examines theoretical and practical issues in the translation of authentic Source Language texts. Students will further examine frequently-occurring translation problems and the range of strategies that can be used to solve them, including awareness of the target audience. Students will also be expected to justify their choice of translation strategy.

Teaching methods: Small group seminars will provide theoretical and practical framework for the development of translation strategies, and will provide a forum for discussion of appropriate translation options.

Assessment: 1 In-class exam (30%) 1 take-away exam (70%) to be undertaken within time constraints reflecting industry practice

MDL6062 Enhanced Languages Project II (5 credits)

The aim of this module is to offer students the opportunity to further increase their skill as translators in the specific language pair under study. It will develop work already undertaken in the Autumn Semester module. The course analyses material from the word to the text level and examines theoretical and practical issues in the translation of authentic Source Language texts. Students will further examine frequently-occurring translation problems and the range of strategies that can be used to solve them, including awareness of the target audience. Students will also be expected to justify their choice of translation strategy.
