The accessibility of our digital learning tools

This page details some of the accessibility features that are in place for the University’s core digital learning tools, and where to find more information about each of these services.

Blackboard Learn

Keyboard navigation

  • Keyboard navigation in Blackboard Learn follows common web navigation models to ensure consistency and familiarity with other web-based experiences.
  • Industry standard keyboard interactions are used throughout Blackboard Learn to move between menus, open menus, and select items within a menu.
  • Keyboard navigation patterns differ between browsers (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Safari), but the interactions within any particular browser are common and consistent.
  • Blackboard Learn’s content editor provides keyboard shortcuts for formatting the content. To use your keyboard to jump to the content editor toolbar, press ALT + F10 in Windows, or ALT + Fn + F10 on a Mac.

Screen readers

  • For the best screen reader experience, Blackboard recommends using Google Chrome and JAWS in Windows, or Safari and VoiceOver on a Mac.
  • Blackboard Learn uses a logical heading structure to properly structure pages and enable users to navigate using headings, giving users the ability to understand the structure of any page quickly, and move to the appropriate section or content item easily.
  • A screen reader tutorial is available to provide screen reader users with more information to help them use the system successfully.

Content

  • Learning materials in Blackboard courses, such as Word Docs and PDFs, can be downloaded in alternative formats using Blackboard Ally.

Blackboard Collaborate

Keyboard navigation

  • Industry standard keyboard interactions are used throughout Blackboard Collaborate.
  • Keyboard navigation patterns differ between browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome), but the interactions within any particular browser are common and consistent.
  • Global keyboard shortcuts are established for common actions in Blackboard Collaborate. Additional keyboard shortcuts include:
  1. Turn microphone on and off, press Alt + M in Windows, press Option + M on a Mac
  2. Turn camera on and off, press Alt + C in Windows, press Option + C on a Mac
  3. Raise and lower your hand, press Alt + H in Windows, press Option + H on a Mac

Screen readers

  • For the best screen reader experience, Blackboard recommends using Google Chrome and JAWS in Windows, or Safari and VoiceOver on a Mac.

Echo360 (Encore)

Player features

  • Encore does work with most keyboard shortcuts that are used for accessibility reasons. You are able to use tab, space bar, up down and sideways arrows to access your captures, play, pause.
  • You are able to access the active learning features such as notes, bookmarking and confusion flags by using keyboard shortcuts.
  • Increase/decrease the playback speed by .25 increments.

Captioning

  • Echo360 includes Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) built on Amazon’s highly accurate Transcribe service to make video more accessible and engaging.
  • For transcripts to be added to your recording please fill in this Encore transcript request form and the Encore Lecture Capture Team will process the request for you.

Google Meet

Keyboard shortcuts

  • Users can control the camera and microphone, and open accessibility features using the keyboard:
  1. Turn microphone on and off, press Control + D in Windows, press Option + D on a Mac
  2. Turn camera on and off, press Control + E in Windows, press Option + E on a Mac
  3. To see a complete list of Google Meet’s keyboard shortcuts, press Shift + ?

Kaltura

Kaltura player features

  • Keyboard shortcuts for all video player functions
  • Players use hidden text elements for every non-text user interface element to support screen reader use
  • All player user interface components are available via HTML5, which means that browser plugins are not required and the player is compatible across devices
  • Sliders are provided for play head and volume control

Automated captioning

  • Kaltura offers an automated captioning service - REACH V2 - which provides vastly improved automatic speech recognition, enabling more accurate captions which require less time to edit.
  • Interactive Transcripts are optionally available for captioned videos, allowing viewers to navigate through the video by searching or browsing for key words or phrases.

Accessibility features

  • PebblePad supports the latest versions of JAWS and NVDA screen readers.
  • All user interface components and navigation elements can be accessed using only the keyboard allowing all users to perform all required actions.

TurningPoint

Accessibility features

  • TurningPoint Desktop and Web are both tested on JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver screen readers.
  • TurningPoint Desktop and Web supports standard keyboard navigation, however not all content is easily accessible without the use of a screen reader.

  • Turnitin Student Feedback Studio and Online Grading, Assignment Submission, Originality Report, Similarity Report and Student PeerMark are tested using JAWS screen reader and keyboard exclusive navigation.
