Access HPC Systems via WEB Browser

 We recommend that access via the applications portal should be made via the INTERNET EXPLORER or FIREFOX.

JAVA PROBLEMS: Although the latest release (i.e. Version 8) of Java will work for the browser method of access to iceberg & ShARC from most workstation, the Mac users running Yosemite (10.10) may still need to install the standalone client by following the link HOW TO FIX JAVA RELATED PROBLEMS.

iceberg-terminal Connect via myAPPs Portal

Notes: This method works well with most browsers on all the common computing platforms (Linux, Windows, MAC).
You can access iceberg from any location without the need to establish a VPN connection first.
However, you must make sure that java support is enabled for your browser as the myApps portal rely on underlying java support.

Explaining the myAPPs Portal

The web browser method of access to iceberg & ShARC is provided by a piece of Java based software entitled 'Sun Global Desktop (SGD)'.

The first time you use the portal, there will be an initialisation phase which will take sometime and ask a number of security questions. You must answer positively to all these security questions.
On rare occasions, your browser may need to update its version of the JAVA plugin.
Once you have managed to login, you will see a window with Applications on the Left Hand Panel.

  • Click on ShARC interactive job or ShARC terminal to start an interactive job or terminal on ShARC.
  • Click on interactive job icon to start an interactive job on iceberg.
  • Alternatively, you can click on the iceberg terminal icon to log onto the iceberg head-node from where you can start an interactive job or submit a batch job by typing qsh or qsub respectively.
  • At the time of writing this document we had Matlab, Maple and Ansys published as applications on the portal. Clicking on these icons will start the corresponding application. We do however recommend that serious users should start these applications from iceberg terminal sessions with appropriate parameters.

Trouble Shooting

If you are having problems accessing iceberg via the myAPPs portal, please test browser java functionality and correct any problems that are reported.

If your java engine is working but you are still having problems connecting to the applications portal try deleting the temporary internet files via the Java Control Panel.
