Academic Representation

Students' Union - Student Advice Centre

University of Sheffield students have the opportunity to represent their peers by become an academic representative. At each year of study and within each programme, a student can volunteer to represent their cohorts views at various levels throughout the University. These include programme, department and faculty levels.

Academic Representatives can volunteer across the year, but most will be recruited in the first four weeks of the academic year. They are responsible for gathering the views of their students on their level of study and attend relevant department meetings to share these views and ideas with staff. All Academic Representatives are expected to complete an online 'core training' session, ran by the Students' Union, before they start their role. Once completed, the reps can also do additional training through the Student Union masterclass programme.

The key meeting academic representatives will attend are student staff committee meetings (SSCs) but this varies from department to department. An Academic Representative may also sit on wider department meetings as required. Academic Representatives can also take on further responsibility by becoming a Faculty Representative, which are elected from the existing academic representative volunteers at the first SSC meeting of the year.
