Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

Welcome to the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (ED&I) website for staff at the University of Sheffield. We work collaboratively across the institution to bring about and implement strategic ED&I initiatives, actions plans, policies & communication campaigns. Our purpose is to advance equality outcomes and redress unequitable imbalances for our staff and students. We strive to achieve this through our Chartermarks (Athena SWAN, Stonewall and upcoming Race Equality Charter), staff networks, training and best practice, guidance and support, recruitment practices and collaborative working with Faculty ED&I teams and Student Services.

In alignment and compliance with the Equality Act 2010, our key areas of work are linked to protected characteristics including race, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment and religion & belief.

We want to ensure that the University of Sheffield is a place where everyone can reach their full potential in the pursuit of excellence and where we can progress social issues whilst maintaining freedom of speech.

Please contact the ED&I team for more information: hrequality@sheffield.ac.uk

Our Areas of Work

Our commitment to progressing this area was formalised with the launch of the Race Equality Strategy and Action Plan in March 2019.

We work closely with the BAME Staff Network and the Race Equality Steering Group to ensure that race-related issues for staff and students are progressed.

We are taking a holistic, collegial and ambitious approach to disability equality and inclusion. A newly formed university level Steering Group is beginning work on a Disability Strategy and Action plan to bring about transformational change across the university community to ensure that our disabled students and staff are fully supported to flourish and meet their full potential.

At the University of Sheffield we are committed to taking actions to reduce gender imbalances across the University. This includes work by our Gender Equality Committee, departments working towards Athena SWAN awards and talent acquisition and promotion through Where Women Work.

The flagship accreditation scheme Athena SWAN Charter has renewed our Silver Institutional Award until 2022.

Progressing LGBT+ inclusion for staff and students is a longstanding and ongoing commitment across the institution.  We believe LGBT+ inclusion is everyone’s responsibility and our successful LGBT+ allies initiative, Open@TUOS, is now into its fifth year.

We are a Stonewall Top 100 Employer for the seventh consecutive year, currently placed 11th, and have also been recognised as a Stonewall Top Trans-Inclusive employer.

It is important to recognise the unique, positive and broad-ranging contribution the Chaplains make to the lives of university students, staff and their wider communities.
