Stonewall Workplace Equality Index 2015
University placed in the Stonewall Top 100 Employers for the second year
We are delighted to announce that for the second consecutive year the University has been ranked in the Top 100 of national organisations and institutions entering the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index 2015. Our position of 43rd is an improvement of 39 places on our 2014 rank of 82nd, which continues a journey of improvement, where in 2013 we were ranked 106th. This is a significant achievement given the increasingly competitive entries from organisations within a variety of sectors.
"I’m delighted that the University of Sheffield has once again been named a Top 100 Employer by Stonewall, and to have improved so much is testimony to our ongoing and sustained commitment to equality and diversity.
We are always striving to create a remarkable place to work, and we do that by working in partnership with our staff and other stakeholders to promote and embed inclusivity in everything we do. I’m very proud of our work in this area, and LGBT equality will continue to be a focus within our wider equality agenda.” Andrew Dodman, HR Director
What is the Workplace Equality Index?
To achieve our goals, we want people, regardless of sexual orientation or any other equality characteristic, to work together to create and be part of a fully inclusive University community. The Workplace Equality Index submission is a driver to examine our own processes and environment and identify opportunities to work collaboratively with colleagues from across the University to enhance the support we offer to our LGBT staff and students.
Our submission outlined our major achievements and LGBT activity over the past year, including hosting the first Stonewall Workplace Equality Index Yorkshire & Humber Awards Event in January 2014, receiving the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce Diversity Award in recognition of our work to enhance LGBT inclusivity within the community, continued sponsorship of Sheffield Pride and the Sheffield Pinknic marked by the flying of the Rainbow Flag, events held as part of LGBT History Month and internal work to enhance our inclusive culture, such as The Big Message Project.
An exciting project is in development which aims to engage LGBT Allies from across the University. Open@TUoS, a collaborative project between the LGBT Staff Network and HR has undergone piloting within the Faculty of Science and will be available for all staff following a University wide launch. Details of the project will appear on the Equality & Diversity webpages, alongside @TUoSLGBT and @ShefUniEandD.
Find out more about the Workplace Equality Index
The Workplace Equality Index was created by the charity Stonewall as a means to benchmark organisations according to their support and provisions for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual (LGB staff), and to challenge employers to ensure a comfortable working environment for LGB staff. The index is a tool for organisations to examine and improve their workplace to create and build upon a culture of inclusivity, and includes questions about policies, initiatives and senior management support and involvement.
"People perform better when they can be themselves". Stonewall
