Retired Staff Association

Retired Staff Association

Who We Are

The Retired Staff Association are a network of retired staff who meet together to continue to support the University and enjoy each other's company. Membership is open to all retired staff. Spouses or partners are also welcome and can become members in their own right.

Social Events

Members usually meet on the second Wednesday of each month at various venues around the University. There is a very good two course lunch at a reasonable cost preceded by a drink and followed by tea or coffee. We occasionally have a speaker in an area of interest. We have had two speakers this year; In January Miles Stevenson, the University's Director of Alumni and Donor Relations, joined us for lunch and gave a fascinating account of the University's history. Some of it we knew but there was much more we learnt from Miles. To round off his presentation Miles treated us to a rendition of the old Edwardian “University Song”.

In May we were delighted to have Mike Spick as our guest and he gave a most interesting account of the life of Sheffield's great benefactor J G Graves. Again we learnt much more about Graves and his many gifts to the city. A truly remarkable man who left his mark in so many ways.

Special Events

Special events during the year include a Christmas Lunch and Easter Lunch.

Our History

In 1966 a lunch group was formed for the wives of academic and administrative staff which was called ‘The 66 Club’. In 1988 George Clayton formed a dining club for retired staff - academic and administrative, ‘The 88 Club’.

In 2002 it was decided to merge the two clubs and to form the Retired Staff Association and the first Chairman was Bernard Kingston. The aim of the Retired staff Association was to ensure retired staff were able to maintain contact with the University, and alongside this was a ‘welfare’ aspect.

The RSA's current Chairman is John Williams. To this day we continue to meet and enjoy each other's company.  New members will be assured of a warm welcome.
