Relocation support for new staff, partners and families

The University of Sheffield recognises the importance of supporting its new staff by making the move to take up a position at the University as straightforward as possible. As well as our generous relocation packages to assist with removal costs and practicalities (see Guidance on reimbursement of costs of relocation), we recognise that changing work location is both a practical matter and also a major life change, often affecting partners and families too.

Professorial and equivalent staff

The University has therefore developed provision to offer relocation guidance and support on an individual and personalised basis for those relocating to take up a permanent appointment at the University at professorial and professorial equivalent level. For eligible staff, this can include help with finding a suitable place to live, advice about transport, schools, health and other care services, and career support for partners who may also need to seek work in the region.

Our professional relocation support provider (Relocate2Sheffield, see below) can advise you from the moment you are offered a position at the University, and work with you in preparation for your move. They will tailor their support to meet your own personal needs, questions and priorities so that your move to Sheffield will be as smooth as possible.

We recognise that amongst the many issues you will be considering in relation to your move, relocating your partner’s career may be an important factor. Whilst we cannot guarantee to find them a position, we can arrange bespoke career support through our partners who have contacts with local organisations, businesses and employment agencies, and also offer guidance on CV-writing, interview skills and career advice.

The service will be tailored to your needs and delivered direct to you and your family, arranged and fully paid by the University. Note: the value of this service is reported for tax purposes as a benefit in kind.

All staff

The University aims to support all new staff relocating to Sheffield, whether or not you are eligible for specific services or allowances. If you are joining the University for a short period or are relocating to Sheffield and need a base while you are looking for somewhere permanent to live, the University of Sheffield can offer a variety of accommodation to suit all needs and close to the campus. Options range from ensuite accommodation for single occupancy to accommodation in the form of flats or houses for families, and you pay the University directly. The Accommodation Services team will be delighted to help you find the right accommodation to meet your needs and they can be contacted at accommodationoffice@sheffield.ac.uk or on 0114 222 4488 (select option 2).

The University also keeps up to date lists to help staff find private rental properties locally; please see Smart Move Sheffield.
