Getting started - new students

Your University IT Account

When you begin your studies at the University, you will be given:

  • A username and password for your University IT account - normally these are organised for you by your department before you start.
  • UCard (University ID card)

Your IT account gives you access to the majority of the University's online services and facilities including email, calendar and University computers.

We have extensive WiFi coverage across campus. Eduroam is our main wireless network for staff and students, that's fast, free, and accessible across campus and in University-owned accommodation.

Accessing online services

museMUSE (My University of Sheffield Environment) provides single log-in access to the majority of the University's online services and provides secure access off campus.

For small number of university-restricted services you may require a secure VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection for access while working away from campus. If you are accessing from China, visit the University Connect for China page for additional advice.

When you log into MUSE for the first time, you'll be prompted to set up multi-factor authentication (see next section).

Once logged in, we recommend familiarising yourself with the following services:

  • My Services - shows common services students use. Click on any service name for access. You can find My services from the top left corner of any University web page.
  • Account Settings - you can get your library PIN, change your password and more.
  • My Record - view and check your personal details such as Registration Number, Next of Kin, and more. You should update your term-time address here as soon as possible.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA)

All University of Sheffield IT accounts are protected by multi-factor authentication (MFA), which provides an extra layer of security.

When you log into MUSE for the first time, you'll be prompted to register a mobile device/smartphone in order to fully access your account. Simply follow the on screen instructions to complete MFA set up. Visit the University's MFA website for further information.

Contact the IT Service Desk (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm) if you aren't prompted to register a device, have device compatibility issues or accessibility needs, or experience difficulties during set up.

Google Mail, Calendar and Drive

The University uses Google Apps for Education, offering a wide range of apps and services including email, calendar, storage and collaborative tools. All staff and student accounts include access to Google Apps.

Your online learning environment - Blackboard

Blackboard is one of the online services you'll use the most during your studies. It's an online space for you to engage with course materials, submit assessments, receive marks and feedback and access a variety of tools to support your learning.

There are loads of great features, so it's a great idea to familiarise yourself with Blackboard before you arrive. Your course material will appear the day before term starts, so don't worry if it's not available yet.

iSheffield app home screen; campus map, timetable and contacts.iSheffield is the University of Sheffield’s free mobile and web app that allows you to access your timetable, library account and lets you top up your print credits on the go. You can also keep up-to-date with campus news and events.

Simply download, accept the terms of use and sign in with your University IT account username and password (the same as you used to log in to MUSE).
