CIV6115   Linear Systems and Structural Analysis   (15 credits)

Year Running: 2017/2018
Credit level: F7
Co-requisites   CIV6135

Description

This module is designed to help students gain elementary knowledge necessary to follow the rest of the course. It splits into two main topics: Linear Systems and Structural Analysis. The former covers fundamentals of linear algebra, matrix analysis and differential equations. The latter focuses on qualitative structural analysis and calculating internal forces in plane structures based on Slope Deflection Method and Stiffness Matrix Method. The students will be taught to use Matlab during this module. A number of tutorial sheets will be given for practice. Most of them will contain the final answers to the problems (often with step by step explanations). Comparing their solutions with those given, students can check their progress. Work on the tutorial sheets will help students identify the main problems in their understanding of the topics covered by the module. Students are encouraged to ask for further explanation during question sessions. There will be three pieces of assessed coursework in the form of problem sheets.
