Apply for HRA approval

The Health Research Authority (HRA) has implemented an integrated NHS permission/R&D approval and NHS ethics approval process. This applies to all researchers wishing to conduct research in the NHS i.e. if the research will involve access to an NHS Trust or other Department of Health Service; this means access to any of the following:

  • patients
  • relatives or carers of patients
  • staff
  • premises

Details on the new process can be found on the HRA's website.  Please note that there have been a number of changes to the documents required as part of IRAS applications.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Submissions for HRA approval are managed by the Integrated Research Application System (IRAS) system.  In order to submit an application applicants will need to arrange electronic authorisation by their research governance sponsor. For projects for which the University is the research governance sponsor the following applies:

The  form contains a section 'Declaration by the Sponsor'. This section of the form requires the authorisation of a designated signatory for your department. You should consult your departmental research governance contact who can advise you on the details of the relevant signatory. These details will need to be entered into the application form so that the signatory will receive an automated email requesting that they provide electronic authorisation.

In order for your authorisation to be granted, your project will need to be registered via the Costing Tool and your  research governance contact will need to see confirmation of independent scientific approval (the funder's approval letter in the case of externally-funded research) before the application can be authorised.

A list of departmental governance contacts can be found here.
