We understand that COVID-19 has had a dramatic impact on student experience and learning.
Whilst the most extreme phase of the global measures is expected to be time limited, the medium and long-term impacts are likely to be felt for a long time.
The effects are more devastating for the physically vulnerable, but there have been varying impacts on different groups in society, for example infection rates appear to be proportionally higher in BAME people.

Our Student Support Services are trained to support the health, welfare and wellbeing of all students.
We are committed to providing equal opportunities for all and continually develop our approach to ensuring that our services can support and understand the issues and lived experiences of our BAME community.

Central Welfare and Guidance (CWaG)
Our CWaG team can provide support if you’re experiencing difficulties that are significantly impacting on your University experience and ability to study.
The Wellbeing Service offer short-term, tailored one-to-one support if you’re feeling down, overwhelmed or struggling to adjust to student life.
They recognise that both psychological understanding and self-care are important for improving and maintaining wellbeing and fostering a sense of belonging that is an important aspect of university life.

Student Access to Mental Health Support (SAMHS) is the first point of contact for you to explore a broad range of psychological support needs.
If you register with SAMHS, you will be offered a telephone or Google Meet appointment with one of our clinicians where you can discuss specific resources, services or interventions that may be helpful.
The University Health Service is our General Practice providing a range of medical support through a team of Doctors, Nurses and other healthcare practitioners.
Career and personal development
The Careers Service can provide expert and impartial support with your career and personal development.
They provide advice and guidance so you can make well-informed career decisions throughout your studies, and transition successfully into placements, graduate employment, further study or research in the UK and abroad.

Harassment and bullying
If you experience any form of discrimination that may be based on characteristics such as your race, gender and sexuality, you can report your concerns and access support via Report and Support.
This may include:
- sexual violence
We recognise that many of our BAME students face daily experiences of racism, which may be characterised by everyday racism such as micro-aggressions*.
We want our community to report these experiences.
Micro-aggressions are intentional or unintentional common daily verbal, behavioural, and environmental communications which transmit hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to a target person because they belong to a marginalised group.
A hate crime is any crime that is targeted at a person because of hostility or prejudice towards that person’s race or ethnicity, religion or belief, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability.

The Black & Minority Ethnic Students' Committee represents BME students, incorporating those of African, Middle-Eastern, Asian, Afro-Caribbean, Indigenous American and Indigenous South Pacific Islander descent.
The committee campaigns to:
- support the rights of BME students
- eliminate racism and all forms of ignorance, discrimination, and prejudice
- address issues of equality and representation at the University and in the community

Our Black, Asian and Other Minority Ethnic (BAME) Staff Network addresses the needs, priorities and concerns of both academic and professional members of staff from diverse non-White ethnic groups.
