Our Mental Health Week

Join us for a week of mental health awareness and education.

Our Mental Health Week follows from World Mental Health Day, which takes place on Thursday 10 October. Events are taking place all week across campus to discuss mental health issues and promote healthy wellbeing.

All events are completely free! (Though you may need to sign up to certain events ahead of time due to space.)

Pop Up Therapy

10am-2pm, Students' Union Foyer

On World Mental Health Day, the University Counselling Service will be holding a pop-up therapy session where you can talk to staff about anything that's on your mind, and find out about the support available.

Speaker Event: Rianna Walcott, co-author of The Colour of Madness

5-6:30pm, Fusion - Students' Union

In collaboration with Black History Month 2019, BME Committee, African Affairs Society, and the Welfare Officer are pleased to present Rianna Walcott, the co-author of The Colour Of Madness, an anthology of art, poetry, short fiction, memoirs, and essays that seek to disrupt the whitewashed narrative of mental health in the United Kingdom.

Rianna will be giving a talk that draws on historical and cultural contexts to highlight the challenges that BAME students face in accessing support in whitewashed healthcare systems, and the important role of communities as support networks. Following the talk, and a reading from the anthology, there will be an opportunity for further discussion and questions.

Peak District: Walk for Wellbeing

9:15am-3pm, meet at Sheffield Interchange near the customer service desk

The Walking Club, WildSoc and Beekeeping Society are hosting a collaboration event to promote better wellbeing through spending time in nature.

We will be walking from Fox House pub to Endcliffe Park, through the Porter Valley Woodland. These tranquil woods follow the path of the Porter Brook running from the edge of the Peak District National Park and down into the city of Sheffield.

Please note, the bus to Fox House will cost £1 with your UCard. Wear sensible footwear and clothing.

Moods & Movies: Inside Out and The Perks of Being a Wallflower

3:30-9:30pm, Film Unit - Sheffield SU Auditorium

Film Unit and the Welfare Officer are hosting a back-to-back screening of Inside Out and The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which explore a wide range of mental health topics in different ways. A light-hearted and safe space, the screening will be a great chance to watch these films through the lens of mental health discussions in wider society, and think about how we can all contribute to this conversation. Between screenings we will be heading to Coffee Revs for hot drinks and snacks.

Let's Talk About Eating Disorders Panel with Sheffield BEAT Society

5-6pm, Gallery Room 2 - Students' Union

This panel discussion will explore the impact of Eating Disorders from both a clinical and personal perspective, touching on issues with diagnosis, treatment, and societal stigma and stereotypes that impact students that have an eating disorder. Speakers include Glenn Waller, Head of the Psychology Department at UoS, Maggie Young, the Clinical Manager of the Sheffield Eating Disorders Service, and Beren Maddison, Welfare Officer at Sheffield SU. Other speakers will be announced shortly.
