Celebrating success at the regional Student Employee of the Year Awards 2015
On Thursday 4th June, the University of Sheffield held an event to celebrate all the Sheffield nominees in the Student Employee of the Year Awards 2015.
As well as recognising the achievement of all our nominees, the event also saw the announcement of the institutional and regional winners. Of the 44 nominations from Sheffield, six students and one employer advanced to the North East regional level, with three students and the employer winning their categories and progressing to the national level of the awards.
The Student Employee of the Year Awards is a national competition that aims to recognise and promote the outstanding contributions and achievements of students who combine part-time work with their study commitments.
Employers are asked to nominate their exceptional students in three different categories; Above and Beyond, Step Up to Leadership and Commercial Impact. These can be either working on or off campus, and there is also an employer award where students can nominate their employer.
The celebration event was organised by The University of Sheffield Student Jobshop and was held at Inox Dine in the Students’ Union building. The glitzy event was a fabulous opportunity to bring together recognised student employees and their employers to celebrate their fantastic achievements.
Student Jobshop Coordinator Amy Gray gave an introduction to the event and spoke about the structure of the awards, Steve Fish, Deputy Director of Student Services at the University of Sheffield, announced and presented winners with an award at institutional level. These winners also went through to the North East Region level of the awards.
The Regional winners were announced at the event too, with the following going through to the Student Employer of the Year 2015 national level of the competition:
On Campus Step Up to Leadership: Adam Millar, Casual Shift Supervisor at Coffee Revolution, Students’ Union
Off Campus Above and Beyond: Zahra Zahid, Biology A-Level Tutor at Oak Tree High School.
On Campus Employer: Emma Briant, Lecturer Journalism Studies
Off Campus Step Up to Leadership: Petru Tarabuta, Student Ambassador at National Instruments
The regional winners will progress through to the national rounds of the competition. The national award ceremony takes place on Thursday 2nd July in Liverpool.
It is hoped that this year's regional winners will continue last year's nation success: in 2014, University of Sheffield graduate Lewis Yates (BEng Civil Engineering Degree with Employment Experience) won the overall national award for his work in Development, Alumni Relations and Events (DARE) as an Alumni Fund Student Caller. The Students’ Union Welcome Desk and Box Office also won ‘On Campus Employer of the Year’.
