Entry Requirements

Taught and Distance Learning MAs & MMus
A first class, or good second class Honours degree or international equivalent in music, or combined degree with substantial Music component. In some cases, a degree in anthropology, drama, education, psychology or another subject is acceptable, as may be equivalent life experience or a performance diploma from a conservatoire or academy.

MPhil & PhD
As for MA; additionally, an MA or MMus degree is normally required for entry into the MPhil or PhD programmes. Students in the performance practice programme normally possess a very high level of practical musical skill prior to the start of their studies.
Each application will be assessed on an individual basis.

International students whose first language is not English are also required to take a language test, e.g., IELTS (minimum score 6.5 with 5.5 in each component) or equivalent.*

*Please note: the MA Music Management requires a higher level of English language (IELTS 7.0 with at least 6 in each component).

How To Apply

If you would like to discuss an application for either the MA, MMus or the MPhil/PhD please do not hesitate to contact us. If you wish to make an application for funding then please return your application form to us at the earliest possible date. We will then help you to formulate your application to the appropriate funding body before the closing deadline (usually the end of April).

To assist your application you should provide us a clear idea of the topic of your proposed MA study or MMus/MPhil/PhD research. Students proposing compositional or performance research at MMus/MPhil or PhD level should send a score or recording of their recent work with their application, unless they will be able to attend for interview/audition. Those proposing a dissertation, should send a research proposal of 500-1,000 words, including aims, a summary of the existing literature on that topic, an outline of methodology and the projected timetable, and a discussion of the significance and originality of the proposed enquiry.
