Applications for the University of Sheffield Research Scholarships for 2024-25 entry are closed.

Applications are assessed on the basis of academic success and qualifications, experience, research background, a clear well-articulated research proposal, the potential impact of the research and a good match with supervisor/department expertise.


The Faculties of Engineering, Health, and Social Sciences are accepting applications as part of an open University of Sheffield Research Scholarship competition for all applicants to their departments.

Award details

Awards will cover tuition fees and a stipend at the UKRI rate (currently £18,622 in 2023). Please consult with your chosen department as to whether funding will cover only Home tuition fees or the full International fee, and what support is available for research costs. 

These scholarships are funded by Research, Partnerships and Innovation for up to three and a half years full-time or seven years part-time study, subject to satisfactory progress.

Part-time studentships are paid at 50% of the full-time rate.


In addition, all faculties are accepting applications for the University of Sheffield Research Scholarships for Black or Black British (of African or Caribbean heritage), Asian or Asian British (of Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Indian heritage) or multiple ethnic background including one of the ethnicity groups listed above. 

The University of Sheffield is committed to increasing opportunities in doctoral research for particular minoritised students who are currently under-represented in our postgraduate research student population.

For 2024 entry, we are delighted to offer five fully-funded University of Sheffield Research Scholarships for students who are UK National, classified as ‘Home’ for tuition fee purposes and identify as Black or Black British (of African or Caribbean heritage), Asian or Asian British (of Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Indian heritage) or are of multiple ethnic backgrounds including one of the ethnicity groups listed above.

These awards are funded via philanthropic donations raised by the University of Sheffield's Campaigns and Alumni Relations (CAR) department.

Candidates will be required to complete a declaration form and upload it to their application.

Candidates will be required to demonstrate that they meet the same eligibility criteria as for any other applicant to their chosen department.

The scholarships cover tuition fees and a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (currently £18,622 in 2023), as well as a generous training and development allowance. 

These scholarships fund up to three and a half years full-time or seven years part-time study, subject to satisfactory progress.

Part-time studentships are paid at 50% of the full-time rate.


Eligibility

  • You should have, or expect to achieve, a first or upper second class UK honours degree or equivalent, and meet any other entry requirements stipulated by your chosen department. 
  • You should be applying to start your first year of study on a full-time or part-time PhD in the 2024/25 academic year.

How to apply

All applicants are required to submit a study application via the Postgraduate Online Application Form

Applicants must select a start date of no earlier than 1st September 2024. Current offer holders with a start date of September 2024 or later will be able to log back into their study applications to access the scholarship form.

Applicants to the Faculties of Arts & Humanities, Engineering, Science and Social Science must ensure that they complete the additional 'Scholarship Application' section of the Postgraduate Online Application Form. This section of the form is only accessible to those who select a PhD start date of 1 September 2024 or later. Applicants to the Faculty of Health should visit this page for instructions.

How to apply for a PhD

The scholarship application form will close at 5pm GMT on 24 January 2024. Some departments have earlier internal deadlines by which they need to have received your application. Please ensure that you have consulted your department so you are aware of their deadline
