MA Translation Studies

About the course

1 year full-time/2 years part-time

You'll study modern languages in the context of the history and current theory of translation. You'll learn how use the standard strategies, procedures and techniques of translators, as well as enhancing your interpretative and analytical skills.

We'll help you to develop your ability to translate from at least one language (normally Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian,  Portuguese, Russian or Spanish) into English and vice versa. You'll receive focused research training and there will be plenty of opportunity for interdisciplinary study.

Entry requirements

You'll need a 2:1 honours degree in a language related discipline (such as linguistics, literature or a language).

English language requirements for overseas students

Overall IELTS grade of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each component, or equivalent.

Our facilities

You'll be based in our brand new specially designed building which offers modern learning, teaching and research spaces. We’re right next to other arts and humanities departments, creating opportunities for the crossover of ideas.

Our self-access centre for independent study has all the tools you’ll need. Use our extensive collection of print, audio and video resources, an audio-visual room that receives over 70 European and Middle Eastern television channels and two computer-assisted language learning laboratories.

To help you maintain or develop speaking and listening proficiency in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish, you can work in tandem with a native speaker to practise. Our Modern Languages Teaching Centre provides language services and teaching across the University to specialists and non-specialists.
