A student commencing Level 1 of a programme of study must take FCE1001 Faculty Global Engineering Challenge Week as a core module. A student will be expected to pass the module in order to progress to Level 3. A student must pass the module in order to graduate.

A student commencing Level 2 of a programme of study must take FCE2001 Engineering - You're Hired as a core module. A student will be expected to pass the module in order to progress to Level 3. A student must pass the module in order to graduate.

A student must normally achieve a weighted mean grade of 54.5 or above at Level 3 in order to proceed to the Year in Industry, progression being at the discretion of the Head of Mechanical Engineering.  A student who fails to progress may be permitted to become instead a student for the Degree of MEng Mechanical Engineering (MECU001) or the Degree of BEng Mechanical Engineering (MECU002).

4B

A student will be responsible for securing a suitable industrial placement in order to take MEC397. The appropriateness of the placement will be determined by the Head of Mechanical Engineering. A student who fails to obtain a suitable placement will instead be required to become a student for the Degree of MEng Mechanical Engineering (MECU001).


4C

MEC397 requires that a student will spend a minimum of 38 weeks working in an industrial establishment, the arrangements being subject to the approval of the Head of Mechanical Engineering. A student who fails to satisfy these requirements may be permitted by the Faculty to become instead a student for the Degree of MEng in Mechanical Engineering (MECU001).

A student must pass MEC464 (Individual Project) at the first attempt in order to be eligible for the award of the Degree of MEng in Mechanical Engineering. A student who fails to satisfy this requirement may be awarded the Degree of BEng in Mechanical Engineering with a Year in Industry (MECU015).

For students commencing Level 1 of their studies prior to the academic year 2019-20: A student must satisfy the requirements of the General Regulations for First Degrees in the Faculty of Engineering as to progression in order to continue as a student for the Degree of MEng in Mechanical Engineering with a Year in Industry (MECU014). A student who fails to satisfy these requirements may be permitted by the Faculty to become instead a student for the Degree of BEng in Mechanical Engineering with a Year in Industry (MECU015). In this instance, in addition to satisfying the requirements of the General Regulations for First Degrees as the Final Examination for the Degree of BEng in Mechanical Engineering with a Year in Industry (MECU015), the student must achieve a grade of 40 or above in the individual element of the Group Design Project (MEC307). A student who does not achieve a grade of 40 or above in the individual element of the Group Design Project (MEC307) at the first attempt will be ineligible for the award of a Degree with Honours.

For students commencing Level 1 of their studies from the academic year 2019-20 onwards: A student must satisfy the requirements of the General Regulations for First Degrees in the Faculty of Engineering as to progression in order to continue as a student for the Degree of MEng Mechanical Engineering with Year in Industry (MECU014).  A student who fails to satisfy these requirements, or chooses to withdraw from the University at Level 3, may be permitted by the Faculty to become instead a student for the Degree of BEng in Mechanical Engineering with a Year in Industry (MECU015).  In this instance, in order to achieve a degree accredited by the IMechE, the student must pass at the first attempt either MEC329 Additional Individual Project or, if they have previously completed MEC307 Group Design Project, MEC331 Individual Extension to Group Design Project.
