CPE6081   Environment: Liquid Effluents   (15 credits)

Description

The course aims to achieve an understanding of the nature and treatment methodologies of liquid effluents. The course will enable students to have an integrated understanding of water treatment unit operations for treatment and remediation of liquid effluents. Using case studies the students will be able to assess the effectiveness of treatment strategies from a variety of liquid effluents, including municipal and industrial sources. Students will be able to recognise and identify shortfalls in current effluent treatment in relation to emerging environmental challenges and propose modifications and strategies for improvement. Through time series analysis of inlet data from existing wastewater treatment facilities, the students will be able to design treatment processes that incorporates allowances for variable input and determine the effect of these on the operation of the treatment facilities over short and long time scales. This will include the challenges related to sustainable drainage solutions on either urban or industrial sites. The students will be required to gain knowledge of the water industry, water use, legislation, characteristics of wastewaters and effluents, pollutant reduction and treatment strategies, unit operations (physical, biological and chemical), contaminated waterways, clean or cleaner technologies and novel treatment methodologies, safety, costs and cost balances/forecasts and a number of case studies.
