Environment

Environmental issues pose a huge challenge to the whole of humanity. It's easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer scale of an issue like climate change. But with many thousands of staff and students, we're big enough to start making a difference – and influential enough to set a great example.

We're already working hard to recycle most of our waste and encourage sustainable travel to the campus. Now our Green Impact initiative is discovering new ways of controlling our carbon emissions. There's still a long way to go. But with your help, we're making the best possible start.

If you are involved in and environmental project on behalf of the University share your story.

More about our work

  • Our Environmental Policy sets out our strategic environmental aims.
  • The University has adopted the HEFCE Sector carbon targets. We aim to reduce our carbon usage by 21,000 tonnes by 2020.
  • We're facing up to the challenge by developing a new Energy Strategy and taking action on behaviour change, energy efficiency and "self generation" of renewable energy.
  • The University now has 3 forms of renewable energy on site - solar panels on the Hicks roof at Sheffield Solar Farm, a ground source heat pump and wind turbine at the AMRC.

Some of our environment projects

Green Impact
In 2011/12, 25 teams across the University took part in the Green Impact scheme raising environmental awareness and encouraging behaviour change.

Environmental Controls energy saving project
The Environmental Controls energy efficiency project is a University partnership with Schneider electric and is aimed at saving energy and money.

Recycling waste
Over 80% of the University's waste is recycled or recovered and we aim to recycle more!

Transport
74% of University of Sheffield staff travel to work sustainably (walking, cycling, public transport or car share)

Managed Staff Printing
We aim to save energy by rationalising the number of print devices in use at the University and reduce waste by managing print more effectively.
