BeCause: we are training active global citizens to make a difference

Learning and Teaching

Our institutional Learning and Teaching Strategy states that all taught programmes should give students the opportunities to develop the Sheffield Graduate attributes, 'making them well equipped to make a difference in a complex world' (p.2)

Learning and Teaching Strategy

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) approaches are integral to acquiring these attributes; in particular those relating to active global citizenship and cultural agility, but also those relating to reflective, critical, collaborative, creative and enterprising approaches (p.7-8).

Sheffield Graduate Attributes

We support and fund academic projects across all parts of the University, to develop content and approaches relevant to ESD.

Funding to think global

Through our priority focus on internationalisation of learning and teaching, taught curricula should cover issues of global environmental, economic and social sustainability wherever appropriate.

Global Engineering Challenge

In this week-long project, all first year students in the Engineering Faculty tackle real-world problems from a global - social, economic & environmental- perspective.

How do we build Sustainable Communities?
At the Sheffield Colloquium, undergraduates explored this question following a series of inspiring talks by some of the University’s world-class researchers.
