Biblical Studies Research

For more than sixty years Sheffield has provided an internationally recognised facility for teaching and research in Biblical Studies, welcoming participation from members of faith and non-faith communities.

The study of the Bible is an interdisciplinary enterprise. Its scope includes the study of manuscripts, the texts themselves, the production and reception of the various books, the situating of books in their ancient and modern contexts, and the study of their influence in cultures past and present.

Our MA in Biblical Research offers you the opportunity to deepen your grounding in the field to prepare for further advanced research at the MPhil/PhD level. It is a flexible programme, and you will be encouraged to develop your skills portfolio, tailored to personal interests and the requirements necessary for your future success.

Francis Landy: 'One of the world's largest and most intense graduate programmes; [with] a reputation for brilliant and innovative teaching.'

Course structure

All students undertake a research training module during the first semester (30 credits), examining the range of different methodologies used by biblical scholars. You will also be expected to formulate and research a topic of your choice, working with the support of a designated supervisor to complete a 12 000-15 000 word dissertation (60 credits).

The remaining coursework is selected according to your interests. Possibilities include developing your language skills in Hebrew, Greek, French or German (beginner, intermediate and advanced levels), as well as a wide range of themed modules focusing on Hebrew Bible and/or New Testament, according to your preferences.

Research activities

MA students also participate in our weekly research seminars. The seminars provide an opportunity to hear fresh scholarship from guest speakers, staff and research students, and interact with our broader research community.
