Professor Keith W. Whitelam

Keith Whitelam joined the Department as Head in 2000. He had previously been Professor of Religious Studies and Head of Department at the University of Stirling. He completed both his undergraduate and postgraduate training at the University of Manchester.

His major research interests are in the history and archaeology of ancient Palestine, the Bible and history, postmodern methods, especially post-colonialism, and the social and political infuences that have shaped the development of biblical studies as a discipline.

His major publications include The Invention of Ancient Israel: The Silencing of Palestinian History, The Emergence of Early Israel in Historical Perspective (with Robert B. Coote), and The Just King: Monarchical Judicial Authority in Ancient Israel.

He is currently completing work on a new history of Palestine in the Iron Age. He is a Director of Sheffield Phoniex Press and joint editor (with John Jarick) of The Journal for the Study of the Old Testament.
