Newson Gale Undergraduate Education Scholarship

newsongaleThe department of Chemical and Biological Engineering are pleased to announce the introduction of the Newson Gale Undergraduate Education Scholarship, generously donated by Newson Gale’s founder and Sheffield University alumni Ernest Kochmann.

The scholarship has been awarded to 2nd Year Lawrie Campbell for excellent academic achievement in his first year. Mr Kochmann presented the award to Lawrie himself at the Festive Get Together for 2nd Year students on Monday 3rd Dec.

As a past student running a successful company involved internationally with process and related process safety, the Ernest Kochmann wants to his company to associate itself with the important work of the department by giving support to undergraduates students.

The award is £1,000 per year for 2 years. The Scholarship is envisaged to be awarded to one second year student each year.

Ernest Kochmann, studied Chemical Engineering and Fuel Technology with the department, graduating in 1969, upon graduating he worked for British Aluminium and studied for a Diploma in Business Administration before joining the family owned firm of Pafra Ltd, a specialist manufacturer of PVA adhesives, in 1983 they were awarded a Queens Award for Export Achievement for their systems division.

He founded founded Newson Gale Ltd in 1989 and has developed the business to become an international leader in static earthing equipment and systems for hazardous areas in process industries. He has for the last seven years been a committee member of the Safety and Loss Prevention Special Interest group of the IChemE. He previously also served on the Pharmaceutical Special Interest Group.
