The University of Sheffield
Department of Economics

Entry requirements and how to apply

Entry requirements for our taught postgraduate courses are based on your academic record and experience.

We usually ask for a good 2:1 undergraduate degree in economics, usually with mathematics and statistics components. We will also consider students with very good degrees in related subjects with strong economics, finance (not accounting finance), mathematics and/or statistics components. If you're awaiting results, we may make you a conditional offer.

If your first language is not English, and you don't hold a degree from an English-speaking university, you'll need to take an English language test – normally IELTS or TOEFL. The required scores are IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6 in each component, or internet-based TOEFL (iBT) 90.

MSc Finance

Entry requirements for the MSc Finance course include a good degree in a field of a strongly quantitative nature (such as finance, economics, mathematics, engineering or physics). If English is not your first language, we require IELTS 7 with no less than 6 in each component (our preferred test), or internet-based TOEFL (iBT) 100.
