Studying for a research degree: programme structure
The Department
The Department of Economics is one of only two remaining independent economics departments in the North of England and we have a well-established and successful postgraduate research programme.
Currently there are around 20 students studying for MPhil or PhD degrees in a wide range of topics. If you choose to study at Sheffield you will become part of this lively community and play a key role in the academic life of the department.
The Social Sciences DTC
The White Rose Doctoral Training Centre in Social Sciences comprises the Universitites of Sheffield, Leeds and York and was established in January 2011 with an investment from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to provide a national training centre for postgraduate researchers in social sciences.
Various funding streams are available for new entrants to the PhD programme beginning their studies in September 2012:
- We invite applications for ESRC PhD Studentships as part of the White Rose Doctoral Training Centre. We have one studentship to award for entry in September 2012, which can be on the basis of +3 (PhD only, for candidates with or expected to receive a good MSc in Economics) or 1+3 (MSc plus PhD, for candidates with or expected to receive a good undergraduate degree in Economics).
- We can also put forward a candidate to compete for one of the White Rose Doctoral Training Centre’s 4 Advanced Quantitative Methods studentships.
- We can also put forward up to two candidates for the university’s faculty studentships for PhD study, which can be either a full or half award.
The rates for full studentships for 2011/12 are £13590 (half award £6795) + fees at the home/EU rate.
There is a single application form for all of these studentships. Candidates should indicate on the form which studentships they want to be considered for, having checked their eligibility.
Further details of these studentships, including information on the application procedure, can be found at:
http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/scholarships
The closing date for all studentship applications is 3 February 2012.
All applicants must have applied for a place as a PhD student in the Department, before they can apply for a studentship, and so applications for a place on the PhD programme must be made in advance of the above deadline. Details on how to apply for a place as a PhD student in the Department of Economics can be found at
