The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Sheffield have been celebrating this month, after news that two of the UK's most respected institutional league tables have placed Sheffield in the top five for the subject area of electrical and electronic engineering. The Guardian University Guide 2024, and the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024, are both annual rankings of higher education institutions in the United Kingdom. These new rankings recognise the University of Sheffield's outstanding performance in the field of electrical and electronic engineering.

The improvement within the Guardian University Guide in particular is an impressive improvement, with the University climbing sixteen places from nineteenth position in 2023, to a remarkable joint third place, alongside the University of Southampton. This remarkable achievement demonstrates the department's commitment to excellence and innovation, and a dedication to creating an exceptional learning environment for students.

This is a very significant improvement from 19th in the 2023 Guardian University Guide rankings. Obviously our strong performance would not have been possible without the contribution from every member of staff over the last few years. Everyone has worked together to ensure our students have a great experience. Therefore we should all feel proud of our contributions to the student experience. I would like to congratulate everyone for this great collective achievement.

As the University of Sheffield's Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering reflects on this remarkable achievement, they remain dedicated to continuous improvement. This notable ranking increase across two of the UK's biggest league tables showcases not only the department's current achievements, but also predicts a promising future for electrical and electronic engineering education at the University of Sheffield, where the subject has seen continued improvements in ranking performance over the years.

This success is also reflected more widely for the University of Sheffield, in that the University as a whole has been ranked 18th best in the UK by the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024, 21st in the Guardian University Guide 2024 (rising from 30th place the previous year), and the accolade of University of the Year for Student Experience by the Daily Mail University Guide 2024.

Professor Koen Lamberts, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, said: "Providing our students with an outstanding student experience is incredibly important to us at Sheffield and I am pleased that the University has been recognised for its world-class learning and teaching offer.

“Sheffield students have access to internships and placements with globally-recognised employers as part of their studies and our teaching ensures they are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a competitive job market. I am proud of the difference our students go on to make when they embark upon their careers and we will continue to provide students with the leading educational experience Sheffield is known for."
