Engineering the future

Harry Brearley was an innovator. In 1913 his discovery of stainless steel helped give Sheffield a global reputation for engineering excellence.

100 years later, the University of Sheffield is doing the same.

Engineering at Sheffield: making a global difference

Our Faculty of Engineering is top rated. In April 2013 we overtook the University of Cambridge for engineering research funding.

We're committed to developing people and teaching the skills which will power the future of engineering in the UK and around the world. Our programme of embedded enterprise training gives students the opportunity to use their engineering skills to innovate and address real-world problems.

We continue to develop our world-class expertise in metals. Our Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with Boeing is leading a renaissance in advanced manufacturing and engineering.

By the end of 2014 we'll have built the most flexible factory in the world. The AMRC Factory 2050 will allow us to quickly switch production between different high-value components and one-off parts, allowing us to further drive innovation in high-value manufacturing.

We have exciting plans for our physical engineering environment in the city. The new Faculty Graduate School will provide a home for collaborative, inter-disciplinary research groups and postgraduate learning. Our £81 million New Engineering Building is predicted to bring £44.5 million into the local economy during the construction phase and first year of operation, with an ongoing annual contribution to Sheffield's economy of £20.6 million.
