What is a Chartered Engineer?

Group of professionalsGraduates who decide to pursue a career in engineering will typically spend a few years in industry gathering evidence and gaining experience to meet the professional standards of an engineering professional institution, ultimately gaining the status of Chartered Engineer.  Chartered engineers are characterised by their ability to develop appropriate solutions to engineering problems, using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change.

Chartered engineers are professionals and with that must demonstrate good judgement, effective management of projects from both a technical and personnel perspective and also be able to profitably manage industrial and commercial enterprises.

In order to pursue Chartered status, an MEng (four year) degree is required although under certain conditions, it is also possible with a BEng (three year) degree with further training.  For more detailed information about becoming a chartered engineer please visit the UK Engineering Council website.  Individual departments at the University of Sheffield also provide additional information on more specialised professional institutions.
