Funding for postgraduate studies
Funding is available from a number of sources to support postgraduate work in the Department. All these funding opportunities are competitive; the majority require prospective students to have applied to study in the Department up to 9 months before the date at which study begins. Departmental funding
The French Department offers two Marjorie Shaw bursaries for MA French Studies students. Click here for details
We will also be offering a three year full time PhD scholarship in 2013. This will be available to Home students only and more details will be posted on the web site soon. In the meantime, please e-mail Dr Wendy Michallat with any queries you may have.
University funding - University Studentships, Endowed Scholarships and Concordat Scholarships
These scholarships and studentships are open to applications from PhD candidates in French. Click on the link below for further details of funding opportunities.
- University Prize Scholarships cover the cost of tuition fees provide a maintenance stipend at a rate linked to the standard Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) awards.
- Endowed scholarships normally have particular conditions attached to them; potential applicants should check carefully that they meet those conditions before applying.
- British Library Scholarships arise from the special relationship the University has with the British Library, and are designed to support projects that draw significantly on both the holdings and expertise of the British Library. Students from the Department of French have been very successful in obtaining Concordat Scholarships in the past.

The White Rose Consortium (the Universities of Sheffield, York, and Leeds) from time to time advertises fully-funded studentships for collaborative PhD study jointly supervised in two or more of the three institutions
External funding
Arts and Humanities Research Council
The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) is the principal source of external funding for postgraduate study in French. The AHRC has awarded the University of Sheffield a number of studentships in specified subject areas and for specified schemes (Research Preparation Masters, Professional Preparation Masters and Doctoral). AHRC funded studentships are now available through the AHRC Block Grant Partnership (BGP).
Through the BGP, the University is now awarding studentships to prospective postgraduate students, on a competitive basis and subject to AHRC approval. EU nationals accepted to study on programmes and in subject areas for which BGP studentships have been allocated will be eligible for nomination to AHRC.

Fund for Women Graduates
The Fund for Women Graduates invites applications from women postgraduates for awards of up to £4000 for maintenance (not fees) to support their FINAL year of PhD study. The deadline is normally late February/early March for funding for the following academic year. The FFWG also run a financial hardship fund that provides grants of up to £1500.
