Research at Sheffield
Researchers in the department are at the forefront of discovery and understanding across the broad range of inquiry from physical to human geography, and we frequently draw in staff from outside the immediate discipline to our benefit, such as from maths, physics, geology, oceanography, economics and political science. A characteristic of the department is a roughly equal balance between human and physical geography as well as on the emerging productive synergies between the two. We have a strong, friendly and vibrant research culture that engages researchers from MSc and PhD students through to our professors. Our research activities, discussions and debates are organised into a number of research groups which connect with and shape key debates in their fields.
The Department of Geography is one of the oldest (founded in 1908) and leading geography departments in Britain, and graded well into the top 10 for Geography at the last Research Assessment Exercise, with 70% of our work assessed as "internationally excellent" or "world-leading". With over 30 full-time academic staff, a graduate school of over 70 PhD and Masters students, and more than 10 full-time researchers employed on research contracts at any one time, we are one of the larger Geography departments in the country.
Research visitors to the Department, potential fellows, MSc and PhD students are particularly welcome, be these international or national, please do get in touch with myself, the relevant groups leaders (see below) or if you are interested in working with a particular person as a postgraduate student, please contact the appropriate academic member of staff.
