Undergraduate learning in Hispanic Studies

At Sheffield we don't just think about modern languages as a way of speaking and writing. To us, they're a way of broadening our understanding of the world. Join the Department of Hispanic Studies and you'll be engaging with a global community of around 700 million.

Our Hispanic Studies degrees involve the study of the Spanish, Portuguese and Catalan languages. But, much more than that, they offer you a deep insight into Hispanic cultures in Europe, Latin America and beyond, and their huge role in international civilisation. Study with us and become a citizen of the world.

 

A special combination

We're one of the UK's most highly rated departments of Hispanic or Iberian studies. Join us and you'll learn alongside teaching staff whose research expertise places them in the subject's highest academic echelons. You'll benefit from state-of-the-art facilities at our base in the University's stunning Jessop West building (pictured right), which opened in 2009.

You'll also get extra language practice from our unique online learning support system. You'll spend a year abroad, speaking the language, living and learning the culture.

You'll design your own degree from a wide range of modules. As well as Spanish, you can learn Portuguese or Catalan, and make friends with around 60 students from Hispanophone countries, spending a year in Sheffield as part of their studies.

And as if all that isn't enough, you'll join a warm, welcoming community where there's always something going on. It's a really special combination.

With around half a billion users worldwide, Spanish now vies with English as the world's second most widely spoken language. Study with us and you'll open up amazing new horizons of possibility – in both your worldview and your future career.

Graduates fluent in foreign languages are still highly sought after by UK employers. The same can be said of the other qualities you'll develop with us. Analytical thinking. Maturity and independence. Cross-cultural awareness. And, of course, excellent written and spoken communication skills.

Many of our graduates go into translating, teaching and interpreting. Quite a few end up living and working abroad after their degrees. Those language skills and cultural awareness also come in useful for jobs in business, non-profit organisations or local, national and European government.

Be part of a community

As one of Britain's best centres for Hispanic Studies, we're naturally popular. We attract hundreds of undergraduate students and we're a fairly big department. But for a big department we have a cosy, friendly feel – and there's plenty going on away from the lecture room.

There's the Hispanic play and concert – where staff and students join up every year to put on a show. There's the Catalan v Portuguese football match. There's filmmaking, talks and a huge range of social events organised by our student society, the Sociedad Hispanica. Don't forget we've got Britain's number one students' union too.

Back at Jessop West, you can expect close contact with our teaching staff. We're not the sort of university where the top academics never do any teaching. With our small-group approach, everyone knows everyone, and all our specialists are involved in teaching from your first year. And we'll assign you a personal tutor who you can approach with any problems whenever you need.
