How to Apply?
Learning Beyond Registration (LBR) is the name used for education funded by regional NHS Strategic Health Authorities to provide non-medical and NHS professionals with courses and modules (subject to their eligibility). The aim is to provide healthcare staff with education courses that are *a key priority for the workforce delivery of their respective Trust*.
You are required to apply for LBR Funding from your LBR Lead if you work in the NHS in South Yorkshire or East Midlands. Your organisation will have a LBR application process which you will need to follow in consultation with your Line Manager and LBR Lead to gain approval for your application.
There are different application processes depending on what you are applying for:
A. Accredited units/modules
1. Application
- Select a unit from our range at www.sheffield.ac.uk/hsccpd
- Click on “Apply” on the right-hand side of the page
- Complete the on-line application form
- If you need a copy for reference, print before you press “Send”
- Send the application form
- A message will appear on screen acknowledging submission of application
- Within 7 days of submitting this you will receive an email with further details
2. Approval
Within 7 days of placing your application you will receive an email; if you are a new applicant it will have your applicant number in and a fees and funding form attached, if you are a continuing student it will have your registration number in and a fees and funding form attached. You will also receive a Ucard application form which you need to complete and return to us with a passport sized photo.
- Download fees and funding form either from the email attachment or from the link on our webpage
- Complete the fees and funding form making sure you enter details about your choice of unit and level of study
- If you are to be funded through LBR Funding, send your form to your LBR Lead to sign
- If you are self-funding, please enter fee on form. If you are unsure how much the fee is, please contact our office (details below)
- If you are sponsored please select this option and submit a sponsor letter on headed paper
- Send the fees and funding form to: (within 4 weeks)

3. Registration
Once you have submitted your funding form your place will be confirmed on the course that you have applied for. You will receive an offer letter with starter details on between 5-8 weeks before the course is due to start. In some cases you may be required to provide further information to support your application and registration on courses that lead to an academic award.
After this you will be sent an email with details of how to register online for your course, you must complete this before you commence the course to comply with University of Sheffield Regulations. If you do not receive this letter please contact our office (details above). Please note that continuing students may not have to register if they have already studied a course within the same financial year.
Once you have registered your Ucard application can be processed giving you access to the IT and Library facilities accross the University of Sheffield.
B. Non-accredited study days
1. Application
- Select a study day from our range at www.sheffield.ac.uk/hsccpd
- Click on “Reserve a place” on the right-hand side of the page
- Complete and submit the on-line form
- Download an application form
2. Approval
- Complete the application form
- Organise approval signatures from Line Manager/LBR Lead/sponsor as necessary
- Arrange payment of fee if self-funding (contact our office for more information - details below)
- Send the form back to us (within 4 weeks) at:

3. Confirmation of place
When we receive your application form, we will send you an email to confirm your place. You will receive an offer letter with starter details 5 weeks before the study day will take place. Please note that your place will not be confirmed until we receive your application form with any necessary approvals.
C. Postgraduate courses
Information about applying for postgraduate courses via our CPD website is available on individual course webpages. If you are funded by the NHS within Yorkshire and the Humber or East Midlands areas, you must have your application approved by your Line Manager and LBR Lead (Who is my LBR Lead?).
