Stephen Pinfield joined the School in 2012, having previously worked as a senior information professional in the UK higher education sector. Latterly, he was Chief Information Officer at the University of Nottingham where he had responsibility for a large converged library and IT service serving Nottingham’s campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia. With experience of involvement in a wide range of research-and-development projects and in a number of national policy initiatives, he now pursues teaching and research interests in various areas of library and information strategy and scholarly communications.

Teaching activities

I am Module Coordinator for the Master’s level Academic and Research Libraries module which is taught by a combination of iSchool staff and experienced thought leaders in the information profession. I teach on that module and various other modules in the Librarianship and Digital Library Management programmes.

My main teaching interests are in library and information services strategy and management, digital library development, project management, systems implementations in organisations, scholarly communications, publishing, and research data management.

Research interests

I have a particular interest in scholarly communication futures and library and information strategy.

My interests in scholarly communication have focused on areas such as open-access publishing and dissemination, research data management and sharing, technology deployment to support research communication, and policy, cultural and economic aspects of openness.

In the area of library and information strategy, I have particular interests in the strategic alignment of library and information services with wider organisational missions, digital library development, and roles and skills for information professionals.
