Research facilities
The Department of Engineering Materials is home to several successful research centres. Bringing together research on common themes these centres provide a focus for research innovation and collaboration; and act to promote communication between staff. Frequently multi or interdisciplinary these centres often bring together researchers from different departments within the University of Sheffield so that a critical mass of expertise is formed.
This page lists the research centres and facilities in which members of the Department of Engineering Materials are involved. A brief description of the work conducted in each centre is given along with a link to the research centres website.
Research centres
Sheffield Centre for Advanced Magnetic Materials and Devices
The Sheffield Centre for Advanced Magnetic Materials & Devices (SCAMMD) was established in 1984. The current director is Professor M R J Gibbs. In 2004, the University moved to consolidate and strengthen this activity with an new initiative which has seen the Centre now located solely within the Department of Engineering Materials, a 5*A rated research Department.

Centre for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering
Biomaterials and tissue engineering represent the pharmacology of the future - tissues and materials engineered to integrate with the patient's own body. Today donor programmes cannot meet the demand for replacement body parts, and donor organs risk rejection by the patient. In addition, the materials used in the construction of medical devices often fail prematurely and are a poor substitute for living tissues.

Ceramics and Composites Laboratory (CCL)
The Ceramics and Composites Laboratory (CCL) is a major EPSRC supported research group that was officially launched in September 2004 within the Department of Engineering Materials.

Centre for Glass Research
Glass Science and Technology has long been an important element in the University´s research profile, and the Centre for Glass Research provides a national and international focus for this work.

Immobilisation Science Laboratory
A Nexia Solutions sponsored university research alliance (URA) in association with the Department of Engineering Materials at the University of Sheffield.

Centre for Cement and Concrete
The Centre for Cement and Concrete (CCC) is based in the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering at the University of Sheffield and is the largest concrete academic research centre in the UK.

IMMPETUS
"Institute for Microstructural and Mechanical Process Engineering: The University of Sheffield". Our Mission Statement is to provide scientific underpinning for the development of physically based models to be used in thermomechanical processing of metals. Our aims are to integrate metallurgical, mechanical and thermal considerations in developing soundly based models for process planning and control to achieve target microstructures and product properties within increasingly fine tolerances and greater efficiency.

NanoLAB
NanoLAB is a centre for nanomaterials and nanotechnology research within the Dept of Engineering Materials. The consortium of academic research groups run research projects focusing on manipulation, characterisation, and structuring of Nanomaterials at the <100nm level. Another emphasis is on dynamical in-situ testing of nanostructures and conducting experiments in confined spaces, such as within the specimen cells of electron microscopes.

Research Centre in Surface Engineering
The Research Centre in Surface Engineering at the University of Sheffield specialises in all matters relating to the production, evaluation and characterisation of coatings and surface treatments for engineering applications. We work closely with partner laboratories within the Department of Engineering Materials which specialise in topic areas such as tissue engineering and magnetic thin films.

The Polymer Centre
The Polymer Centre draws its staff from a number of schools and departments at the University of Sheffield, which is a world-class centre for research across an unusually wide range of subjects in the sciences, engineering, medicine, social sciences and humanities.

Research facilities
Sorby Centre for Electron Microscopy
The Sorby Centre continues to follow its long established and renowned tradition of excellence, using advanced transmission and scanning electron microscopy to investigate the microstructure and chemistry of materials. The experience and expertise of the centre and its staff are available for use by university staff, and post graduate and undergraduate students. In addition these services are available to the industrial sector through our consultancy services.

The X-ray Diffraction Laboratory
The department has state-of-the-art X-ray powder diffraction facilities available for both research and contract work. At the heart of the X-ray Diffraction Laboratory are two high resolution STOE STADI P powder diffractometers.
