Keith Schofield Scholarship Awarded
Fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student Ross Peel has become the latest recipient of the Keith Schofield scholarship, a £2,500 prize awarded annually to a promising young engineering student from the South Yorkshire area.
Ross, who is originally from Styrrup near Doncaster, is currently studying for an MEng in Mechanical Engineering with French. After spending his third year at the INSA de Lyon in France, Ross has now returned to Sheffield to complete his final year and plans to work as a design engineer in the defence sector when he graduates.
The prize is sponsored by Barnsley-based engineering firm Norec, and is named in memory of Keith Schofield, a Norec employee who held senior management positions in both operations and business development. A Mechanical Engineering graduate himself, throughout his career Keith encouraged the development of young engineers in industry and was regarded as a mentor and friend by many of his colleagues.
Ross was presented the scholarship by Norec’s Managing Director Greg Kelley and Finance Director Garry Warburton. The presentation was also attended by Keith Schofield’s wife Sue and his son Simon, as well as Dr Andrew Nowakowski and Professor Rob Dwyer-Joyce from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Ross said: “I am extremely grateful to everyone at Norec Ltd and the University of Sheffield for selecting me to receive the Keith Schofield scholarship. It is wonderful that private industry is still willing to invest in the development of student engineers.
“The scholarship money will allow me to focus on my academic studies at the most crucial time in my degree course, without having to worry about living costs or take up part time work.”
