International medal awarded to Sheffield professor

An archaeologist from the University of Sheffield has received international acclaim for his contributions to the field of Aegean archaeology.

Emeritus Professor Keith Branigan, from the University´s Department of Archaeology, received the Institute for Aegean Prehistory (INSTAP) medal, which was presented by Professor Philip Betancourt, Director of INSTAP, at the 14th Sheffield Aegean Round Table held recently.

The Sheffield Round Table was started by Professor Branigan in 1995 and each year hosts a three-day research workshop attended by scholars from Europe and North America. The revised papers read at each Round Table are published as Sheffield Studies in Aegean Archaeology.

Aegean Prehistory studies the Neolithic and Bronze Age civilisations that occupied the Aegean Sea region, bounded by Greece to the west and Turkey to the east, including the islands. The goal of INSTAP's program is to promote knowledge of the Aegean region in prehistory, and to support archaeological fieldwork and research in that area.

Professor Branigan´s research covers a range of Aegean prehistory including society and economy in Pre-Palatial Crete, metalworking in the Prehistoric Aegean and funerary archaeology and behaviour in the Prehistoric Aegean. He was appointed to the first Chair of Archaeology at Sheffield in 1976 and worked as Professor of Prehistory and Archaeology there until 2005, when he then took on his current role of Emeritus Professor in the Department.

Professor Keith Branigan said: "I am obviously delighted to be awarded the INSTAP medal but also feel very honoured because I know just how many outstanding Aegean prehistorians, including several from the Department here in Sheffield, would be worthy recipients of this award."

Professor John Bennet, Head of the Department of Archaeology at the University of Sheffield, said: "It is a great pleasure to see Keith´s contribution to our field recognised in this way. Despite his modesty, he is a worthy recipient of the Award. As Head of Department, I am also delighted that the Award recognises the achievement of the Department in providing the environment for the Awardee to excel. This is a real honour for our Department, which Keith himself built from small beginnings in 1976."
